PET recycling firm reaches “last stop” before industrial-level production

15/02/2016
Specialist PET recycling company Ioniqa has announced that it will test its process on a 1,000-litre scale, describing this as the last stop before proceeding to “industrial level” 10,000 tonne production in 2017. It uses the name Magnetic Smart to describe the process.

On making the announcement, the chief executive of Rotterdam-based Ioniqa, Tonnis Hooghoudt, said: “Each year millions of tonnes of post-consumer PET waste ends up down-cycled, dumped or incinerated, which is totally unnecessary.” He explained that with Magnetic Smart his company is able to recycle all kinds of used coloured PET into new raw materials that can compete with oil-based PET, and that the procedure can be repeated “endlessly”.

Ioniqa was founded in 2009 as a spin-off clean-tech company from Eindhoven University of Technology and the Dutch Polymers Institute.
