Ioniqa wants to ‘close the oil tap’ for plastic
11/07/2019
Making this announcement, Tonnis Hooghoudt, Ioniqa founder and CEO, said: “With this colossal step forward, Ioniqa is now the main contributor worldwide to actually closing this loop for PET plastics in the circular economy.”
He added that by taking in all types of PET (including coloured PET) and recycling it into raw material for use in food grade packaging, the group has the possibility to “close the oil tap for making new PET plastic”.
It expects further refinements to its operations to allow the plant to reach optimal capacity later this year.
Mr Hooghoudt has also explained that Ioniqa hopes to apply its process to other plastics in the future, such as synthetic fibres or bio-plastics.
Ioniqa was founded in 2009 as a spin-off clean-tech company from Eindhoven University of Technology and the Dutch Polymers Institute.
