BASF to bring polyurethane developments to Simac

Chemicals manufacturer BASF will have a number of polyurethane developments on display at the 2016 edition of the Simac footwear technology exhibition in Milan from February 23 to 25.

Technologies on show will include Elastopan (PU systems), Elastollan (TPU) and Infinergy (E-TPU), which BASF has said offers lighter, softer and more flexible solutions for the footwear industry.

One recent development that the company has aimed specifically at the sports sector is Elastopan Light Sports, a tailor-made polyether-based PU system. Its main features are lightness, a high level of cushioning as well as high rebound and hydrolysis resistance. The material is already successfully deployed in Puma’s Ignite and Ignite ProKnit running shoes.

For its part, Elastollan Light is a thermoplastic polyurethane mixed with blowing agent masterbatch, which is used to manufacture particularly lightweight, high-grade soles on a cost-efficient basis by injection moulding.

BASF also said in the build-up to Simac that its Infinergy expanded thermoplastic polyurethane (E-TPU) material is now being used in safety shoes. The closed-cell, elastic particle foam features low density, high elasticity, high abrasion resistance, high tensile strength and good long-term durability over a wide temperature range (between – 20°C and + 40°C) along with good chemical resistance, it said.
