Nike removes Air Jordan 12 from Korean market

The inclusion of a design motif reminiscent of Japan’s Rising Sun symbol on the Air Jordan 12 basketball shoes has sparked a big controversy in South Korea and has resulted in sports brand Nike removing the shoes from the Korean market, local media have reported.

A university professor, Seo Kyoung-duk, said he sent letters of complaint to Nike and to basketball star Michael Jordan about the matter, but said he has received no a reply. He argued that the shoe’s use of the motif that looks like the sun’s rays as they appear on the Japanese imperial flag was insensitive owing to ill-feeling in South Korea over the country’s treatment at the hands of the Japanese army in the first half of the twentieth century.

“We understand the sensitivity of this issue and we apologise for any offense caused. The Air Jordan 12 will no longer be sold in Korea,” Nike Korea told The Korea Herald in a statement.
