Footwear industry analysts have calculated that, while Vietnam was the third-biggest exporter of shoes in the world, after China and Italy, in 2015, 60% of the shoes sold in Vietnamese shops are imported.

Vietnam currently has an estimated 800 footwear manufacturing companies in operation producing a combined volume of close to 1.2 billion pairs of shoes per year. It also has a population of more than 90 million consumers, many of whom appear to prefer shoes made overseas.

Analysts have said younger Vietnamese consumers are particularly partial to imported shoes, with lower-cost product imported from Thailand claiming 50% of market share.

In the face of this, Vietnamese footwear brand Biti has invested in new machinery to launch a new sports shoe brand called Hunter in the hope of making an impression on its domestic athletic footwear market.
