La Rioja brand wins best eco-design prize for ‘no trace’ sandals

CTCR, the footwear technology centre in the Spanish region of La Rioja, helped local footwear brand Calzados Zels win a major award in May.

Zels picked up the prize for best eco-design project in the 2016 design awards competition run by the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid.

The winning entry was Zels’ Fabiolas No Trace sandals, which the brand developed with CTCR. They are made with a variety of sustainable raw materials, including recycled bicycle tyres in the outer sole, ground cork and recycled foam in the insole and uppers made from natural fibres including piña fibre from pineapple leaves.
