Ocean waste-derived uniforms appeal to Swatch

06/06/2016
Swiss watch brand Swatch has commissioned clothing brand Ecoalf to supply clothing made from recycled fibres, sourced from ocean waste, for a new corporate uniform range.

Founded in Madrid in 2009, Ecoalf uses post-industrial use wool and cotton, discarded car tyres and coffee grounds as well as plastic recovered from the oceans to make its products. It has said that each garment in the new Swatch ragne will use recycled material from between two and five 1.5 litre plastic bottles.

Ecoalf founder, Javier Goyeneche, has set up a project with the crews of fishing boats along Spain’s east coast. Mr Goyeneche says each crew is dredging up between four and five kilos of waste in its nets each day. He has placed special containers for the plastic waste at the quayside in a number of ports and has arranged for a weekly collection of the material, which then goes for recycling.
