Dick's acquires Sports Authority brand name

US sportswear retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods has purchased the brand name and other intellectual property of Sports Authority at a bankruptcy auction.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Dick’s acquired the name and property for $15 million, exceeding the $13 million bid from UK sporting goods chain Sports Direct.

The intellectual property purchased includes the Sports Authority e-commerce website, SportsAuthority.com, a loyalty programme with 28.5 million members and a list of 114 million customer files, Reuters reports.

Dick’s also paid an additional $8 million for 31 Sports Authority store leases, which were among the 463 up for auction after the company failed to negotiate a reorganisation plan with its creditors, forcing it into liquidation.
