Sports Authority faces store closures

US sportswear retailer Sports Authority could be forced to close most if not all of its 450 stores after failing to reach an agreement with its creditors for a reorganisation plan.

The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2016 with the planned closure of 140 stores. Having abandoned its attempts for a stand-alone reorganisation Sports Authority will now proceed with the sale of all or some of its assets.

Sports Authority is "pursuing a sale of some or all of the business," said a statement. "We have received initial expressions of interest from a number of potential buyers, and we are optimistic about the results of the [sale] process. The outcome of the process will determine whether any additional store closings will be required."
