South African cotton workers secure pay rise

20/07/2016
Workers in South Africa’s cotton textile industry have secured an above-inflation pay rise. It will affect over 4,500 workers at 70 woven cotton textile factories in the country.

Andre Kriel, general secretary of the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu), said the workers would receive an 8.25% rise in wages, which would be backdated to July 1.

"This above-inflation settlement is a major step forwards in Sactwu’s living-wage campaign," said Kriel, referring to the union’s campaign to improve the living conditions of textile workers in South Africa.

The agreement will now be sent to the country’s minister for labour for final approval.
