Clothing drags down UK retail sales

UK retail sales decreased more than expected in June, with clothing taking a particularly big hit due to wet weather. Sales, excluding petrol, fell 0.9% compared to May, missing the 0.6% drop predicted by economists. It was the biggest fall in sixth months. Year-on-year sales were up 3.9%, compared to 5.2% in May.

Clothing retailers continued a difficult 2016 a 7.2% fall in the sales of clothing and footwear. Total volume of sales was down 6.1% on the back of the wettest June for several years.

“All types of stores showed growth in June with the exception of clothing and footwear which struggled again due to the changeable weather,” said the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which collected the data.
