UK retail sales fall

Retail sales in the UK dropped 1.3% in March, compared to the previous month, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This was 2.7% up on figures from March 2015.

Clothing and footwear sales both declined, contributing to a 1.5% drop in non-food sales. Sales of clothing fell 2.3% Food sales fell 1.9% but sales of fuel were up 0.5% on February’s figures. Overall retail sales rose 3.7% in the first quarter of 2016 from a year earlier.

Online sales were 8.9% higher than in March 2015 but 0.5% down on February, meaning they continue to exceed sales from physical outlets.
