Vietnam: four out of five garment workers are women

08/09/2016
A newly published country report on Vietnam from non-profit organisation the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) has found that the country’s textile and garment companies employ an estimated 2.5 million workers, with a further 2 million employed in supporting industries (such as logistics, packaging and transportation).

Women dominate the garment industry in Vietnam, making up 81.6% of the workforce, according to FWF. The average age of garment workers there is low, 28 years old, compared to 36 in China. Migrants from rural areas also dominate the garment labour force with 83.7% of workers originating in rural areas, the report said.

“As interest from European textile brands continues to grow, Vietnam has grown significantly
in importance to Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) members,” the organisation said in the report. It said it expects to expand its activities in Vietnam in the years ahead.
