The chief executive of specialist size-and-fit technology provider, Janice Wang, gave a presentation entitled ‘Disruption and innovation in high-performance apparel’ at a conference in Hong Kong on September 9.

Her talk was part of a symposium that the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel organised on the theme of ‘Fashion meets technology: the art and science of our industry’.

In her address, Ms Wang said high-performance sportswear has dominated the bulk of growth in the apparel market in recent years and explained that consumers are demanding “ever-more personalised, more functional and more fashionable goods in a shorter space of time”.

She said there are advantages in manufacturing locally, but that this is in a context of customers demanding “a more sustainable product”. She highlighted Under Armour’s Lighthouse Project, Nike’s partnership with Apollo Global Management and adidas’ Speed Factory idea of recent examples of developments in this arena.
