Work needed because cotton’s future is “not secure”

Speaking at the International Cotton Association’s 2016 industry event in Liverpool on October 21, Forum For The Future’s chief executive, Dr Sally Uren, said her organisation believes the initiative is necessary because the future of cotton is “not secure”. She said she believes cotton should have a future, but that the industry that plays a part in the world of 2040 is unlikely to be the same cotton industry that we have today.
Areas in which she said the industry will change are in the way it builds demand among retailers and consumers, transparency and traceability.
“Create more demand for sustainable cotton,” Dr Uren said, “and market transformation will happen. But market transformation happens when you pull multiple levers at the same time. That’s how sustainable cotton will become the norm and, in turn, that’s how cotton can have a sustainable future.”
