Swimmer starts attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean

Swimwear brand Arena has equipped UK athlete Ben Hooper for his attempt to become the first person to swim across the Atlantic Ocean, which began on November 7.

With Dakar, Senegal, as the starting point, Ben Hooper has calculated that, if successful, he will reach Natal in Brazil in March, swimming a total distance of more than 1,600 nautical miles.

Rules for the world record attempt stipulate that he must wear swimming shorts from Arena rather than a wetsuit (unless required by extreme conditions or safety needs). He is allowed to wear a shark-repellent device, supplied by New Jersey-based SharkDefense.

He will swim in two sessions each day and will sleep in support boat each night.
