Chinese company must stop using Jordan name

The Chinese Supreme Court has ruled in favour of basketball legend Michael Jordan in a case against a Chinese sports company.

The company uses the name Qiaodan, which is identical to Mr Jordan’s Chinese name. The court ruled that Qiaodan Sports could no longer use the name in Chinese characters, but can continue to use the English Alphabet version.

Mr Jordan, who is chief executive officer of Nike’s Jordan Brand, said in a statement that fans and consumers in China have always known him by the name Qiaodan. He added that they deserve to know that Qiaodan Sports has no connection to him.

The legal dispute began in 2012 when Mr Jordan first sued the company, which is based in the province of Fujian. Lower Chinese courts ruled in favour of the company in 2014 but Mr Jordan chose to pursue the case in China’s highest court.
