Ethiopia’s textile target looks ambitious

Ethiopia has work to do to meet a target of achieving textile exports with a value of more than $1 billion by 2010, according to a new report from Spain’s export promotions agency, ICEX.

The report says that figures for 2014 suggest that the sector contributed 6% of all of Ethiopia’s exports and had a value of $160 million. The government has set a target of the textile industry contributing more than 20% of all export revenues by 2020.

ICEX says there are 130 textile factories functioning in Ethiopia at the moment, 35 of them owned by overseas companies. Its report also points out that Ethiopia will need to develop its domestic cotton production to meet the target: only 40% of the cotton its textile factories use now comes from Ethiopian cotton farmers.
