Two new textile parks on the horizon in Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC) has awarded contracts for the construction of two new industrial parks for the textile and garment industry to two Chinese companies.

CGC Overseas Construction Group will build the Bole Lemi II industrial park in the southern part of the capital city Addis Ababa. The project, which will take 12 months, is an extension to the existing Bole Lemi I park.

Construction of the Jimma Industrial Park in the state of Oromia will be overseen by China Communications Construction Company. It has already carried out several projects in Ethiopia and hopes to complete the park within nine months.

At a ceremony to announced the contracts, Sisay Gemechu, CEO of IPDC, said the textile and garment industry was a key priority for the Ethiopian government as it is labour intensive and uses locally produced raw materials.
