French startup offers personal climate control
French startup Clim8 has developed a smart baselayer shirt that automatically regulates the wearer’s temperature.

Sensors embedded in the yarn used in the garment are able to measure skin temperature, ambient temperature, activity level and humidity. This data is transmitted to an accompanying smartphone application, which automatically adjusts the temperature via integrated heating elements. The wearer is able to set their preferred temperature and the system ensures that this is maintained.

It delivers heat when the wearer is cold and reduces it when they start to warm up during exercise. It needs to be worn close to the skin, both to capture the temperature data and to deliver warmth.

"As soon as you begin to exercise and the body starts to generate heat, the Clim8 panels will be turned off,” Julian Guéritée, Clim8’s research R&D director, told sportstextiles.com. It will also automatically shut off at 42-43°C for safety reasons.

The innovation received a Gold Award in the baselayer category at the recent ISPO Awards. It was also a finalist in the wearables category of the Brand New Award. Beatriz Garcia, part of the ISPO award jury, described it as “the future of warm clothes in the outdoor market”.

The CEO of Clim8, Florian Miguet, explained to sportstextiles.com that the company wants to be an ingredient brand and license its technology to large brands. He revealed that it is already in discussion with several major brands.

It is aiming to launch a product in September 2017 and is exploring possibilities for garments beyond this baselayer prototype. It has also started work on a cooling technology.
