Kenyan government promises support for apparel manufacturers

Kenya’s ministry of industry and trade is looking to build improved partnerships with local textile and apparel companies in order to improve the quality of the products manufactured in the country.

The strategy is part of an effort to fast-track the government’s ‘Buy Kenyan, Build Kenyan’ initiative, according to Adan Mohamed, Kenyan minister for industry and trade.

He added that Kenya’s textile and apparel manufacturers had the full support of the government ahead of what could be a difficult year. This is due to the strength of the US dollar, the impact that US President Donald Trump’s external trade policies could have on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), and the delay in the signing of an agreement between East African countries and the European Union (EU).
