AGOA concern impacts Kenya’s apparel exports to US

The volume of apparel that Kenya exported to the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) dropped 12.1% in 2016, according to the 2017 Economic Survey from the Kenyan National Bureau of Statistics.

AGOA was created in May 2000 to give preferential access to the US market for over 6,000 products from 39 sub-Saharan Africa nations, including Kenya. It was renewed for a further ten years in 2016 when President Barack Obama was still in office.

Since then, he has been succeeded by President Donald Trump, whose trade policies have provoked concern for the future of AGOA, with fears that it could be cut short or not renewed upon expiry.

Under AGOA, the US became Kenya’s most important destination for apparel exports. Textiles and apparel make up 80% of Kenya’s total exports to the US under the agreement.
