Nigeria spending $4 billion annually on textile, clothing imports

Nigeria spends over $4 billion each year importing textiles and ready-made clothing, according to Hamma Kwaiaffa, director general of the Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association (NTMA).

Speaking in the capital city, Abuja, he said this worrying statistic comes despite efforts by the Nigerian government to revive the country’s textile industry. He urged the government to take urgent steps to address this issue, one of the key concerns of those within the textile industry, so that the progress from recent initiatives isn’t lost.

Mr Kwaiaffa believes that Nigeria’s textile industry has the potential to satisfy the demand from its domestic market as well as from exports. He pinpointed the Economic Community of West African states, which represents a market of 175 million people, as a strong export destination. He said the country should also take advantage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides duty-free access to the US market, and the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) scheme, which other African countries are already exploiting.
