Nigeria wants to boost garment industry

The Nigerian government has set aside $162 million of its budget for 2017 for the development of the country’s garment and textile industry.

The move forms part of the government’s efforts to promote the garment and textile sector in order to create jobs and diversify the economy. It also wants to increase the use of ‘Made in Nigeria’ items.

Speaking at a workshop for garment operators in Abuja, Aisha Abubakar, Nigerian minister of state for industry, trade and investment, said the government was conscious that garments and textiles is an area that it needs to get right. She added that three of the six special economic zones that are to be built will be for textiles.

She said that the government is also planning to support the industry through investment in infrastructure as it plays a crucial role in creating jobs and reducing poverty in Nigeria.
