Nigeria’s Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) recently organised a two-day training workshop for members of the cotton, textile and garment sectors as part of an initiative to revive garment manufacturing in the country.

The event took place in the city of Kaduna and was attended by 150 members of the Nigerian Tailoring and Fashion Designer Association.

RMRDC wants to increase domestic garment production in order to reduce the level of imports. Some local production would also be destined for export.

Speaking at the training session in Kaduna, the director general of RMRDC, Dr Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, said employment in the Nigerian textile industry is at an all-time low. It now employs 20,000 people, he added, compared to 250,000 in 1997.
