Boost for New York garment manufacturers

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) is to inject $51.3 million into the city’s garment manufacturing industry to stabilise and strengthen it.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America and the Garment District Alliance are collaborating on the 10-year support package, which aims to provide business assistance, to help garment manufacturers gain access to advanced technology, and to assist with workforce development.

The funding will be available to factories across New York’s five boroughs. It will offer relocation and expansion support to companies that are interested in moving from the city’s Garment District.

“I’m committed not just to the stability of garment manufacturing, but to its growth,” said Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor of New York. “There’s a market and a demand for clothes that are Made in New York, and we’re taking bold steps to help firms move to the new space we’ve developed so they can grow and thrive.”
