DuPont celebrates 50 years of Nomex fibre

28/03/2017
The Protection Solutions division of DuPont will hold a series of events and activities throughout 2017 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its heat- and flame-resistant Nomex fibre.

DuPont introduced Nomex in woven and non-woven forms in 1967. It was developed in response to the deaths of several race car drivers who had been involved in fiery crashes. It was first tested in racing suits in 1966 before being commercialised the following year.

Nomex fibre has been most frequently used in protective apparel. The durability, mobility and flame resistance of the fibre has seen it become a crucial component of the clothing used by firefighters across the world. It has also been used in apparel worn by military pilots, combat vehicle crew, racing drivers, pit crew members and industrial workers.

“During the past 50 years, Nomex has helped keep people safe while they drilled beneath the earth’s core, rocketed to outer space and tackled countless other challenges that were once considered impossible,” said John Richard, global business director for DuPont Nomex.

He added that the company believes the potential of Nomex has not yet been fully explored, predicting that “the best is yet to come”.

To coincide with the anniversary. DuPont has developed a new brand platform for the product, Nomex Never Quit.
