UK students to explore potential of US cotton
US cotton brand Cotton USA has announced the launch of an innovation competition in partnership with Loughborough University in the UK.

Second year students specialising in textiles and fabrics will take part in the competition. They will receive individual support to develop new and innovative ways of working with US cotton.

They will work with high-quality US cotton fabrics to produce a portfolio of original designs. Cotton USA is encouraging them to experiment with materials and processes to develop innovative fabrics.

The participating students will have the opportunity to present their collections to fellow students, academics and industry representatives in summer 2017. Cotton USA will also promote their work to an international network of brands and retailers.

“More than ever, working with fabrics and fibres that are of the highest quality and responsibly produced is an essential part of the design process,” said Stephanie Thiers-Ratcliffe, international marketing manager for Cotton USA.

“Our partnership with Loughborough University is a very important part of COTTON USA’s ongoing commitment to support the wider industry, by educating future industry professionals about the versatility, consistency and uses of US cotton,” she added.

For her part, Kerry Walton, programme director for Textiles: Innovation and Design at Loughborough University, said the competition would give students the opportunity to develop “vital skills” for the future, and to learn how important quality materials are to innovative designs.
