Shima Seiki to celebrate knitting’s technical textiles potential in Frankfurt

Knitting machine manufacturer Shima Seiki will have its latest technology on display at the Techtextil exhibition in Frankfurt (May 9-12). The Japanese company said in the build-up to Techtextil that it is aiming to promote knitted applications in the field of technical textiles at the event.

“Knitting offers great potential for technical textiles with its inherent stretch and compression characteristics,” the company said. “And flat knitting provides further potential as the only textile production method that can shape fabric on the machine.”

To this end, the company will demonstrate its new SVR123SP flat knitting machine at the Frankfurt exhibition. This machine features an extra loop presser bed for a wider range of knitting techniques including inlay, which Shima Seiki says has gained particular attention in knitted technical textiles because of its capacity for producing a hybrid knit-weave pattern by inserting yarn into existing knit fabric in a weave fashion.

Inlay can be used to control stretch characteristics of knitted fabrics, and since new materials such as metallic and monofilament yarns can be used, a wide range of new applications in industrial textiles are possible, the company said.
