Berghaus to increase focus on sustainability
Outdoor brand Berghaus has announced that is taking steps to improve sustainability across its supply chain and to provide transparency on the factories it uses around the world.

It aims to improve its understanding of the environmental impact of the fabrics and other components that go into its products. It also wants to ensure it is working with factories that are managing energy, water, waste and chemicals in a responsible and efficient manner.

Berghaus will carry out what it calls a “large exercise” to identify all the factories which are used in the processing and manufacturing of fabrics and other components. It will also seek to partner with more factories that are bluesign certified; currently, more than 70% of its fabric supplier are bluesign system partners. The brand is also using the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Index to improve supply chain transparency.

Berghaus plans to increase the number of its products that satisfy the criteria of its Madekind programme. It has said that by autumn/winter 2017, 40% of the Berghaus range will be the eligible to feature in this collection. To do so, they must meet at least one of the following conditions:

•The principal fabrics used must be dyed using the brand’s proprietary Colourkind dyeing process, which requires less water and chemicals
•The product must contain more than 50% recycled fabrics or insulation material
•The product must contain more than 90% bluesign approved fabrics
•The down used in the product must be 100% certified by the Responsible Down Standard
