Denim company Levi Strauss & Co (LS&Co.) has announced that it will grant a total of $350,000 to the inaugural fellows from its LS&Co Collaboratory programme, which was created to reward entrepreneurs who are helping to create a more sustainable apparel industry.

Each year, the project will focus on a different issue related to the social and environmental sustainability challenges facing the industry. The first year of the project focuses on water.

Fellows were invited to submit project proposals for reducing water usage or improving water quality. Levi’s said it selected “some of the boldest, leading-edge ideas from leaders who represent the future of the apparel industry”. They will now receive varying levels of funding to further develop their projects

The 2017 fellows include:

Miriam Dym, who has created a water reuse system through her company Dym|California textiles, which focuses on producing local textiles
Jesus Ciriza Larroana, the founder of natural dye company The Colours of Nature, who is developing new natural indigo fermentation dyeing techniques that could enable water reductions in large-scale fibre dyeing
Wesley Owiti, who is installing a grey water recycling system that will provide water to tree seedlings at a shared production space for apparel micro-entrepreneurs through his social enterprise Cherehani Africa
Rebecca van Bergen, founder of non-profit organisation Nest, who is partnering with an engineering firm to create practical and affordable solutions for sustainable wastewater treatment, management and disposal in small artisan workshops

“We were honoured to bring together the next generation of global leaders to share ideas, aspirations and innovations for achieving a common goal of accelerating the sustainability of the apparel industry,” said Paul Dillinger, vice president and head of global product innovation at LS&Co.
