Judge rules against Adidas in patent dispute

Reuters has reported that a US judge has rejected an attempt by sportswear manufacturer Adidas to block US footwear brand Skechers from selling athletic shoes that it claimed copied its “Springblade” concept.

Adidas filed the lawsuit in July 2016, alleging that Skechers copied the “leaf spring” midsole of its Springblade style, infringing on two separate patents. It sought damages for the infringement as well as moving for a preliminary injunction preventing Skechers from selling its Mega Blade shoe range.

US District judge Michael Simon ruled that there had been no wilful infringement by Skechers as it began selling the Mega Blade sneakers one year before Adidas filed the patents in May 2016. He also dismissed the request for an injunction as Adidas has not shown it faces irreparable harm without one, or that it was likely to win the case.
