Luxury brand Burberry has awarded £3 million to London’s Royall College of Art, the majority of which will be used to establish a new material research group.

The company said the Burberry Material Futures Research Group will aim to invent more sustainable materials and advance manufacturing the benefit of industry.

The chief creative and chief executive officer of Burberry, Christopher Bailey, said the founding of the group reflects the heritage of the brand’s founder, Thomas Burberry, who he described as a “material innovator”. He gave the example of the “breathable, water-resistant and hardwearing” gabardine fabric, which Mr Burberry invented in 1879 and which remains an important material for the brand.
