The Burberry Material Futures Research Group, an organisation established at London’s Royal College of Art (RCA) with financial support from the luxury brand, has appointed Professor Sharon Baurley as its chair.

The group was launched in 2017 after the Burberry Foundation pledged £3 million in funding. Its aim is to “apply radical thinking to invent new sustainable materials, transform consumer experience and advance manufacturing to benefit the whole industry and wider community.”

Professor Baurley will be in charge of defining the group’s research agenda. Her extensive industry-focused background ranges from smart materials to the impact of new technologies on the future of manufacturing.

She will also be responsible for leading the commercial and practical applications of the group’s innovations via collaboration with industry partners.

She said: “It’s very exciting to have the opportunity to build the Burberry Material Futures Research Group into an internationally leading centre in research and innovation in design and materials that contributes to building a future of sustainable design and production.”

The Burberry Material Futures Research Group will be a “virtual” centre until it officially opens its doors in 2020 at RCA’s new campus.
