Afghan herders to benefit from Burberry and Oxfam’s cashmere scheme
The Burberry Foundation and Oxfam are supporting a five-year initiative in Afghanistan to strengthen the cashmere industry and provide herders with skills, services and access to markets.

The two companies, alongside social enterprise PUR Projet, will work with local goat herders to develop community-owned cooperatives to support sustainable farming.

Leanne Wood, a trustee of the Burberry Foundation, said: “There is enormous potential for the Afghan cashmere industry and we believe our programme will deliver resources that will go some way to making it a profitable and sustainable industry for local communities.”

Afghanistan is the third largest global producer of cashmere fibre, behind Mongolia and China. The country exports roughly 1,000 tons of cashmere per year, accounting for 7% of total global production, according to Oxfam.
