HKRITA rewarded at Geneva invention show
The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) had an impressive showing at the recent International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva (March 29-April 2), picking up several awards.

The 45th edition of the event saw a total of 725 exhibitors and more than a thousand inventions on display.

HKRITA was awarded a gold medal with special commendation from the judging panel for functional textiles made from bio-based, bio-degradable fibres. The company said it uses a low temperature dyeing process that delivers good colour fastness and saves 32% more energy than the conventional methods used to dye PET material. The textiles also offer natural anti-bacterial properties.

It also received a gold medal with jury commendation for its development of fine yak yarns and fabrics. Researchers at HKRITA have developed a new spinning method and system for producing 100% fine yak yarns and fibres. The company said the spun yarns are strong, smooth and regular, while the knitted fabrics made with them offer a soft feel and better air-permeability and heat retention than cashmere and wool.

The judging panel in Geneva handed a silver medal to HKRITA for an insole that can detects which part of the foot strikes the ground. It is designed to prevent heel or forefoot landings, which carry a higher risk of injury than midfoot landings. It features two force sensors located at the heel and the second metatarsal of the foot. They are connected to a mini circuit board that links to a smartphone application. The data collected can be used to help runners to modify their running style to prevent injury or facilitate rehabilitation.
