The kit functions by integrating a hijab into a baselayer shirt to enable the country’s women footballers to be covered from head to toe while playing. Former team captain Khalida Popal worked hand-in-hand with Hummel and with the Afghanistan Football Federation to develop the new kit.
At the time of the launch, Ms Popal said: “It was a huge honour to captain my country but it was an even bigger honour to be seen as a role model and an inspiration for thousands of young girls and women in Afghanistan.”
For his part, Hummel’s owner, Christian Stadil, said the brand’s work with the Afghanistan Football Federation has allowed it to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to give underdogs top-billing. “We don’t sponsor the biggest teams in the world,” he said, “but we make partnerships with teams and clubs with a story to tell, like Afghanistan.”
