Berghaus launches its first exercise hijab
UK outdoor brand Berghaus has joined the ranks of activewear players like Lululemon and Nike in offering its first technical hijab.
The launch comes after three years of development alongside company ambassador Zahrah Mahmood, a social media influencer popularly known as ‘The Hillwalking Hijabi’ on Instagram.
Based in Glasgow, Ms Mahmood was named president of the Ramblers Scotland charity earlier this year.
Berghaus’ wrap-style scarf was designed to avoid what the keen walker described as the “egg head” look, a phrase she says some hijab-wearing women use in reference to pull-on sports hijabs. “The material will just stick to you and not feel good,” she said of those designs.
Instead, the co-created hijab may be draped, folded and fastened to suit, framing the face not unlike more traditional head coverings. Carefully placed studs replace the unreliable, and at times uncomfortable, pins typically used to fix similar scarves, to help keep it in place during outdoor activities. The hijab is also built on a cap-like base, secured by a concealed headband and fastened with a knot for added security.
Made from Polartec’s lightweight, cooling and breathable Delta fabric, the hijab has wicking capabilities, along with other performance properties such as reduced skin cling. Reduced layers help regulate body temperature.
Ms Mahmood went on to say that she hoped the design would "make people feel included and valued" and support other Muslim women in feeling "confident, secure and ready for anything while outdoors".
