Director general of the Brussels-based organisation, Frédéric Van Houte said at the time of publication that there is “continued and solid growth” for manmade fibres, while cotton’s and wool’s share of the overall fibre market “stagnates”.
In 2016, manmade fibres represented 75% of all textile fibres produced worldwide, according to the CIRFS report, with this percentage reaching 81% in Europe, the world’s largest exporter of acrylic and cellulosic fibres, and the biggest producer of ultra-high strength and polypropylene fibres.
Mr Van Houte said: “Over the last 10 years, manmade fibres production has grown by around 5% annually while cotton production has decreased by 1.6% and wool by 1.2%. This shows the uninterrupted success of manmade fibres.”
