Outdoor, textile and sports bodies call for action on microplastics

16/01/2018
The European Textile and Apparel Confederation (EURATEX), the European Outdoor Group (EOG), the European Man Made Fibres Association (CIRFS) and the Federation of European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) have launched a cross-industry agreement on preventing the release into the environment of microplastic. The European Commission has endorsed the move.

What the different groups call “a set of effective and economically feasible measures” are part of the agreement. These include defining common methods for measuring the release of microplastic, sharing knowledge, and supporting new research into microplastic release.

They said on announcing the agreement on January 16 that they believe mutual work and better understanding of an issue that could “potentially affect billions of people worldwide” will result in “feasible solutions that can be effectively applied by industry, consumers, and authorities”.

They are aiming to draft a formal proposal to the European Commission by the end of 2018 for filling knowledge gaps, identifying and quantifying sources of microplastic pollution and finding ways to work on possible solutions.
