FESI urges public authorities to promote physical activity
01/06/2018
The study was launched by the European Commission and was carried out by consultancies VVA Europe and KMU Forschung Austria. FESI was closely involved with it.
“The much-needed figures and analysis demonstrate that the growing sedentary lifestyle, which accounts for almost half of the European population, is a massive problem for the wellbeing of citizens and the sector’s economic potential,” said Frank Dassler, FESI President. “This demonstrates the urgent need for public authorities to increase promotion of physical activity and better infrastructures.”
He added that he was pleased with how FESI members engaged with the project, which allowed it to become as comprehensive as possible and touch on several sectors within the sporting goods industry.
As well as public promotion of sport and healthy lifestyles, the study highlighted increased focus on innovation as the biggest growth potentials for the sector.
Conversely, international protectionist measures were identified as the biggest barriers to the development of the sporting goods industry.
On this subject, Mr Dassler said: “All barriers that hinder the growth of physical activity and trade in sustainable sporting goods necessary for the heathy development of European citizens, such as the slow finalisation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and any remaining protectionist measures, should be removed”.
