FESI says free-trade agreement can trigger improvements in Vietnam

The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) has urged the European Union to speed up the process for finalising a free-trade agreement with Vietnam.

On making the comment on March 19, FESI said the sporting goods industry was “fully aware of remaining challenges concerning labour conditions in Vietnam” where many sports garments and shoes are manufactured. But it said the free-trade agreement could be “a positive trigger” for improving conditions for workers in the Asian country.

“Some FESI members are already on the ground and have worked with non-government organisations, including the Fair Wear Foundation and Better Work Vietnam,” the federation said.

Vietnam and the European Union reached agreement for a free-trade deal in 2015 but ratification has been held up.
