FESI calls for action on counterfeit goods FIFA World Cup

The European Commission and the Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI), a Brussels-based lobbying group for sports goods manufacturers, organised a conference on May 30 on counterfeit products. The event took place in Moscow, with the organisers saying their aim was to raise awareness of fake sports goods produced to sell to fans at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which takes place in Russia from June 14-July 15.

On 30 May 2018, before the official kick-start of the FIFA World Cup competition, FESI joins forces with the European Commission in organising a large scale conference aimed at raising awareness on counterfeit products surrounding the event.

“This is a unique opportunity for FESI members to raise awareness on counterfeit products ahead of such a large-scale sporting event,” said FESI deputy secretary general, Youri Mercier. “Together with the Russian authorities, I am confident this conference will yield fruitful results.”

Commercial-scale counterfeiting of sporting goods undermine the innovation and creativity of FESI members, the organisation has said, with considerable financial loss for legitimate businesses and consumers receiving a raw deal.

The conference assessed how to detect counterfeit sporting goods and attendees included police officers and customs officials. FIFA and the Russian minister for sport were also represented among the 150 participants.
