Adidas updates World Cup ball for knockout stages
Sportswear manufacturer adidas has unveiled an updated version of the official match ball it is supplying for the ongoing 2018 FIFA football World Cup in Russia.

So far in the tournament, which began on June 14, the teams have been playing with the Telstar 18 ball, itself an upgrade on the original Telstar used in the 1970 World Cup.

For the knockout stages of the competition, which get underway on June 30, adidas has created the Telstar Mechta, with the name taken from the Russian word for ‘dreams’ or ‘ambitions’.

The key difference to the Telstar 18 is a change in colour scheme, with red chosen to represent the “rising heat” of knockout competition. It also features a metallic print and a texture graphic effect.

As with the Telstar 18, the Telstar Mechta features an embedded NFC chip which allows consumers to interact with it using a smartphone. Each ball has a unique identifier which unlocks exclusive content and information for the user.
