Industry unites against microplastic release

16/01/2018
Five European textile and sporting bodies have joined International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products to industry agreement for the prevention of microplastic release from synthetic textiles washing, backed by the European Commission.

It coincides with the launch of the commission’s plastics strategy to eliminate single-use plastic by modernising plastics production and collection by investing €350 million in research. It said 55% of all plastic must be recycled by 2030.

The European Textile and Apparel Confederation (EURATEX), the European Outdoor Group (EOG), the European Man Made Fibres Association (CIRFS) and the Federation of European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) agreed that solutions need to be found to the release of microplastic into global marine and freshwater during the lifecycle of textiles.

The associations said they will define common measurement methods, share knowledge and participate in industrial research to investigate feasible options.

By the end of the year, the associations aim to draft a proposal for the European Commission to identify and quantify sources of microplastic pollutions and work on possible solutions.
