HeiQ and Kjus make suits for special bobsleigh run
Swiss textile technology innovator HeiQ and ski brand Kjus have joined forces to support a campaign to preserve the oldest and most natural bobsleigh track in the world, the Olympia Bob Run in the Engadine Valley, Switzerland.

People in the valley argue that the track, which hosted Winter Olympic events in 1928 and 1948, is  the only naturally refrigerated bobsled track in the world. It is hand-built year by year by families of mountain farmers that have carried out this practice for generations.

Business people with a love of traditional Swiss winter sports have formed a new club called Cristal Da Glatsch, which held an inaugural race on the Olympia Bob Run on March 1 to raise publicity. HeiQ and Kjus were sponsors of special bob suits made for the occasion. The chief executives of Kjus and HeiQ, Nico Serena and Carlo Centonze respectively, were among the participants, partnering with experienced Swiss bobsleigh athletes to race down the hill at more than 130 kilometres per hour.

The special suits were skintight and aerodynamic to reduce drag on the way into the bob and down the run. Finishing technology from HeiQ helped minimise air resistance and enhance quick-dry properties in the suits.

Mr Centonze said afterwards that he still felt cold during the run and would like to further enhance the suits in the future to include heating technology. He said: “An event like this can lead to all sorts of crazy ideas in the HeiQ team’s heads.”
