One of the founders of outdoor clothing brand Superdry, Julian Dunkerton, has announced that he is stepping down from the business to concentrate on other business and charitable activities.

He said he was “immensely proud” of what Superdry has achieved in its 15-year history. “As a fast growing, innovative business,” he said, “Superdry has always evolved to ensure it keeps delivering.”

As a parting gesture, Mr Dunkerton has said he will donate Superdry shares worth more than £1 million to campaign group the Blue Marine Foundation. The London-based organisation campaigns to create marine reserves and address the problem of over-fishing.

On learning of Mr Dunkerton’s donation, co-founder and chief executive of Blue Marine, Chris Gorell Barnes, said: “We are so grateful to Julian Dunkerton for his generous and visionary support of the Blue Marine Foundation. This will enable us to roll out our model of sustainable fishing, which both revives marine life and means that fishermen can earn more for fishing less. We are hugely excited at being given this opportunity to transform the future of UK fishing. His ongoing commitment to our charity is hugely valued.”
