Superdry founder’s return prompts resignations

03/04/2019
One of the founders of UK-based clothing brand Superdry, Julian Dunkerton, who in 2018 stepped away from the company, has won back a place on its board.

In March 2018, Mr Dunkerton announced he would step down from the business to concentrate on other business and charitable activities. He went on to donate Superdry shares worth more than £1 million to campaign group the Blue Marine Foundation, a London-based organisation which campaigns to create marine reserves and address the problem of over-fishing.

He has been highly critical of Superdry’s strategy in recent months and has accused its board of not understanding the fashion business. He still has an 18% stake in the business.

After a dispute that has gone on for a number of months, Mr Dunkerton received the majority of investor votes he required to re-join the board as a non-executive director.

His return prompted the immediate resignation of a number of senior executives, most notably chief executive Euan Sutherland, chairman Peter Bamford and finance chief Ed Barker. In an interesting twist, Mr Dunkerton was then appointed interim chief executive.
