Sewbot to help Li & Fung create the ‘Supply Chain of the Future’

Hong Kong-based Li & Fung, one of the world’s largest sourcing groups, has announced it has agreed a strategic cooperation with SoftWear Automation, the developer of the Sewbot autonomous workline technology.

The two companies will work together with the aim of “creating a fully-digital manufacturing supply chain for apparel and textile products”. Their initial focus will be on the supply chain for T-shirts, with the potential to expand to other product categories in the future.

SoftWear Automation has said its Sewbot workline is capable of creating one complete T-shirt every 22 seconds, which it says is twice as fast as manual sewing. The machine requires a single operator.

Li & Fung’s most recent three-year plan, which covers the period from 2017-19, places great emphasis on speed, innovation and digitalisation as it seeks to create what it calls the ‘Supply Chain of the Future’.

Spencer Fund, CEO of the company, said: “We have already made substantial progress in our digital journey to create the Supply Chain of the Future and this partnership with SoftWear Automation is another building block in our end-to-end digital supply chain.”

He added: “Through this collaboration we want to partner with an initial set of manufacturers to create our first fully-digital apparel supply chain and use those learnings to scale the technology and create customised solutions for our supplier network around the world. The benefits will not only reach our suppliers but all our stakeholders along the supply chain.”
