Portuguese soling and footwear components manufacturer Atlanta has said it it is in the process of securing a patent for a new anti-slip composite materials that it says will work well in footwear for icy and snowy conditions.

Based at Macieira da Lixa, near Porto, Atlanta specialises in shoe soles in materials including ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyurethane (PU) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), producing between 15,000 and 20,000 soles per day. It has the capacity to produce soles in one, two or three colours and exports around 90% of this production to customers outside Portugal.

Atlanta recently patented a new composite material that blends natural wood fibres with synthetic rubber for use in heels and the company has said it now wants to secure further patents. During a factory visit organised in the build-up to the 2018 UITIC Congress in Porto, the company’s Carlos Coelho told sportstextiles that a new material that will give outdoor enthusiasts better grip on snow and ice is one of the ideas Atlanta is taking forward.
